4th International Festival Russian Folklore

“Songs of the Volga”

24-29 September 2008

For many years the Wageningen based foundation Zarjanka and the related choral society Wjetsherinki have been organizing extraordinary cultural events in the Netherlands, related to the Russian authentic folklore tradition. Our third and second International Folklore Festival “Songs of the Black Earth” took place in November 2006 and September 2000.
In 1998 we held our first International Folklore Festival of Russian village singing, “Narodnyj Prazdnik” (folk holiday). Many distinguished ensembles from the Netherlands and from abroad performed in these festivals, among them of course various ensembles from Russia. During this festival you will encounter a number of international ensembles from Russia.
This time the festival is going to highlight the multiple ethnic groups that live along the river Volga in Russia. We are going to invite the Volga-German groups “Veilchen’’ (Pansy), “Volga-heimat» (Volga-fatherland), Accordion Trio ”Traum” (Dream). The Volga-Germans are descendants of Germans who moved from Germany to Russia in the 18th century. Furthermore, the Chuvash group “Schul’kjemje” (female chain) from the city of Saratov, and the Tatar group “Chischmja” (holy brook) from the city of Volgograd and of course the Russian group from Saratov: “Blagodat”. The autonomous Mordva republic is represented by the group Umarina (little apple) from Novopushkinskoye, from the Engel’s area of the Saratov region.
Read more about these groups in the Flyer in PDF format (Dutch!).Besides, there will be performances by the four vocal groups of Irina Raspopova from Wageningen and Utrecht: “Zarjanka”, “Zarnitsa”, “Wjetsherinki ” and “Kalina”. Another Dutch ensemble will also be invited: “Yargon”, a folk-orchestra from Doetinchem: www.orkestyargon.nlWatch video fragments of ZarjankaUmarinaBlagodat’Schul’kjemjeWolga-HeimatTraum  and Veilchen.
